AEDs for Newbies

An AED is a little, portable machine that analyzes heart rhythms for any abnormalities and, if necessary , instructs the trained help to provide an electrical shock to the heart of an sudden cardiac arrest sufferer.  This shock , called defibrillation, might allow the heart to reestablish a regular beat.

An AED puts forth  voice prompts to instruct   the trained help. As soon as the equipment is turned on , the trained help will be directed to apply the two pads that come with the Automated External Defibrillator to the sufferer's chest. As soon as they are in place , the Automated External Defibrillator will commence monitoring the sufferer's heart rhythm.  If a "shockable" rhythm is detected , the machine will charge itself and instruct the rescuer to stand clear of the victim and to press the shock button.

An AED is programmed to teach rescuers exactly what to do , using   voice and visual instructions. Rescuers place   sticky electrode pads on the SCA victim's chest. Through these electrodes, the AED is designed to automatically evaluate the electrical activity of the heart to determine if a "shockable" rhythm exists.

Whether you suffer an SCA at home  or in the Emergency Room of a hospital, defibrillation is THE best treatment.

Automated External Defibrillator laws change from state to state.  Check to see what your state requires .

Keep in mind that, not all AED’s are made the same .  With that in mind we recommend the ZOLL AED Plus, because the AED Plus it the most user friendly AED available .
