To prove they were working dogs, their tails were docked(cut) as proof. The docking of the tail was a long practiced custom that lasted even in modern times, which garnered the Old English Sheepdog the nickname, "Bobtail". However, they do just fine if you do not live on a farm. They just need to be exercised properly as well as having access to being able to go indoors when it's too hot.

The Old English Sheepdog is a joy as a family pet and a showman in the ring due to their personality and the ease in training. There are really no major health issues present with this breed other than CHD(coronary heart disease) which can be minimized with proper exercise, dog foods rich in wholesome and organic ingredients rich in vitamins and proteins, regular veterary care, and love. The Old English Sheepdog can live anywhere between 10-15 years depending on it's lifestyle.
