Audit Tips You Need To Fix IRS Problems
If you receive a notice from the IRS that you are being audited, do not panic. These IRS audit tips will let you leave your issues behind:
- You will receive a bill next time if you don't respond to the notice in a specific amount of time, typically 30 days.
- The notice will tell you what items you'll need to bring to the audit.
- Organize all the documents needed for the audit to save both you and the auditor time.
- Request for missing documents immediately because it is your responsibility to provide these documents and it may take awhile to get them.
- Do not take extra documents to the audit, except for the ones required. If questioned about documents that were not required, tell them the information isn't at hand.
- Don't go to the audit angry because it won't help. If you are courteous and polite, the audit will be a piece of cake and the auditor will see things your way.
- Do not bring original documents.Present copies of the documents to the auditor. If you give the auditor the originals, you won't get them back if they're lost. Ask the auditor to make copies for you. Take the originals after the audit.
- Don't say too much. "Yes" and "no" are safe answers. Supplying the auditor with more information than is necessary may provide him a reason to request even more documentation. For example, if you have just purchased a new car or a new home, it might be an indication that you've increased your income. You might be investigated further.
- Understand that you have the right to appeal, though it's best to fix the issues at the audit.
