The Global Warming – And What You Can Do About It
Ever heard of the global warming? This is an imminent global threat to the future of our world. It is caused by the tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by the burning of coal and oil.
Coal and oil are fossilized remains of plants and other organisms that lived on the Earth many many millions of years ago. They thrived in the ancient sunlight of those ages, and their biomass was preserved because it became buried deep within the earth. See this link for further details.
We humans are now digging up all this energy-rich material, which was produced by ancient sunlight, and by burning it we release it into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. The increased presence of this gas causes the temperature of the Earth's surface to go up.
By now there is a strong worldwide consensus that we have to stop this enormous release of carbon dioxide very soon to avoid facing serious consequences. Unfortunately, the Bush administration has done everything in its power to obstruct and delay the necessary actions.
Precious time has been lost because of that policy. But it appears that the new administration under Mr. Obama is finally going to adress this serious challenge in a competent manner.
And what about you and me? We may feel very small and powerless in the face of these issues – yet there is a lot we can do.The future is in renewable energy sources, and right now you can begin to shift your use of electric power to such sources. How about building your own domestic wind turbine for instance? A wind generator like that can supply a surprising amount of free electric power to your home.
Or you can actually make fairly cheap solar panels for putting up on the roof of your house. Solar cells used to be very expensive, but the cost of producing them is going down every day. New technology makes them much easier to make than only a few years ago.
